Land Protection Opportunities

The following two land conservation projects will provide tremendous benefit to Bozeman’s community trail system. Both will require a variety of strategies and funding sources. Donations of funding or real estate can help achieve these land conservation goals. To make a donation to one of these projects, contact GVLT at (406) 587-8404.

Saving the Summit of Burke Park

At the south end of Burke Park, the park’s highest and most scenic point is actually private land that the Burke family originally held for construction of a family home. The family recognizes the tremendous impact developing this property would have on one of the community’s most treasured places, and they have generously offered to sell it to the City at far below its market value. You can help save the summit of Burke Park by donating funds or real estate to help us permanently protect this property as public parkland. Click on the link below to view a map showing Burke Park in green, the Burke property in red, and a superimposed drawing of the Knolls at Hillcrest development that is currently under construction. Note that the Ida Ave. right-of-way will not be developed as part of the Knolls at Hillcrest. It will remain permanent open space.

Bozeman Creek Greenway

Landowners and neighbors have worked together with the City to create a conservation vision for 50 acres of open space along Bozeman Creek north of Kagy Boulevard. The 50-acre greenway envisioned in the Bozeman Creek Neighborhood Plan would create a trail corridor through new parks and conserved private open space, linking the Gallagator Trail to Kagy. It would also provide bicyclists and pedestrians with an alternative to traveling on the narrow and dangerous Church Street. Achieving this conservation vision will require substantial funding as well as creative strategies such as real estate swaps. Donations of cash or real estate will help conserve the last large area of private open space along Bozeman Creek near the heart of the community.
