Gifts of Cash
Gifts of cash are often the simplest and most convenient way to support GVLT. Your gift will be used to support GVLT's three conservation programs: conservation easements, community trails and public education. Cash gifts are tax-deductible for the calendar year in which they are made.

Gift of Appreciated Assets
Gifts of stocks, real estate or other appreciated assets can be mutually beneficial ways of giving to GVLT. Gifting appreciated assets allows you to receive a tax deduction for the fair market value of the appreciated gift. Gifting appreciated assets can also help you avoid costly capital gains taxes.
GVLT is able to sell your assets and put all the money to work without any additional tax liabilities.

Charitable Gift Annuities
A charitable gift annuity is an irrevocable transfer of cash or appreciated assets to GVLT in exchange for a fixed annuity income for life. The rate of return is determined by your age.
In addition to receiving a life income from the gift, there are federal and state tax benefits available. If the gift is specified for GVLT's endowment fund, there are additional benefits under the new Montana Tax Credit.

Bequests
Sometimes the desire to give is constrained by your current financial situation. A will allows you, rather than the state, to determine the disposition of your assets and reflect the importance of GVLT and its work in your life.
There are a number of ways you can leave a permanent legacy to GVLT through your will. You may bequest a specific sum of money or a percentage of your estate. You may also stipulate that GVLT receive the remainder of the estate after other gifts are distributed.
Bequests to GVLT are not subject to estate taxes. As a result, more of your money can be put to work for GVLT instead of lost to unnecessary taxes.

Charitable Remainder Trusts
A charitable remainder trust (CRT) is an irrevocable, tax-exempt trust that may provide lifetime income for you and your family. A CRT holds your gifted assets and pays a dividend to you or your family. At the termination of the trust, GVLT receives the remaining assets. The trust is managed by a financial professional to help ensure the proper return from the gifted assets.
A CRT provides both income and estate tax deductions and offers a savings of the capital gains tax when the trust sells appreciated assets. Additional tax benefits may be available under the Montana Tax Credit when specified for GVLT's endowment fund.

Montana Tax Credit
A new Montana tax credit (HB 434) allows you to pay less in Montana income taxes when a qualified planned gift is made to a Montana charitable endowment.
This bill allows you to take a tax credit of up to 50% of qualifying contributions, up to a maximum $10,000 credit per person per year. A credit of equal size is allowable for cash gifts to endowments from S corporations, C corporations, partnerships and limited liability companies (LLCs).
Qualified contributions by individuals are irrevocable planned gifts, including: charitable remainder trusts; charitable gift annuities; and paid-up life insurance policies.
This Montana tax credit has a sunset clause and is set to expire December 31, 2001.
