Since the 1990s, the Triple Tree Trail south of Bozeman has provided a wonderful 2.8 mile hike with exceptional views of the Gallatin Valley. Today, the trail is in need of repairs – including some reroutes to reduce erosion and a new bridge over Limestone Creek. The Gallatin Valley Land Trust is partnering with Gallatin Coutny, the Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation, and the Triple Tree Homeowner’s Association to make these improvements and establish a permanent trail easement over the top trail loop, where it is on State land. We will begin some of the trail work in 2012 and expect to complete the project within 2 years.

This summer, GVLT will be replacing a footbridge across Nash Creek where the Sundance Springs and Sourdough Trails intersect. In memory of Riley Cole, the wooden and metal bridge (designed by Ken VanDeWalle, architect) will provide safe passage for bicycles and pedestrians while giving Nash Creek more room to meander through the meadow. A trail that sees thousands of user-visits a year and which was one of Riley’s favorite trails, this bridge is a critical link in the Main Street to the Mountains trail system. GVLT is currently accepting tax-deductible donations in Riley’s memory to help make this bridge a reality. Additional funding has been secured through a City of Bozeman Parkland Improvement Grant and Recreational Trails Program Grant.

If you are a regular reader of this page, you’ve been hearing about it for weeks: There is a problem in our community with people, dogs, dog waste, and trails. This year alone, there have been six letters to the editor about dogs and trails in the Bozeman Daily Chronicle – that’s one every two weeks.

It’s no surprise that this issue comes up in the spring; as the snow recedes, people and dogs hit the trail, and the waste left out over the winter becomes exposed. For entire article click here.

GVLT, TPL, and the City are moving forward with plans to put a bond initiative for parks and trails on the November 2012 ballot. A Steering Committee of stakeholders, community leaders, and businesses has formed to help guide the messaging and communications about the bond. Kelly, Penelope, Steve Schnee, Bill Cochran, and many other GVLT supporters are on the Steering Committee. The national TPL advisor, Josh Alpert, recently put together some messaging materials about the bond, which all GVLT board and committee members should review:

Messaging Information: Please review these top messages and language to use (and not use) about the bond. The key message is: Investing now in protecting our water quality, maintaining and improving out trails, and preserving our natural areas will keep our quality of life for our families, businesses and future generations.

Poll results: Please review this executive summary of the poll results to get a better sense of how our voters feel. Please do not distribute.

At the core of GVLT’s mission is working in partnership with willing landowners, civic organizations, government agencies, and local businesses. This month, we want to highlight our partner, REI. In 2010 and 2011, GVLT was the proud recipient of grants from REI that helped us to complete improvements at the Sourdough Canyon Trailhead and partner with the Bozeman Boulders Initiative to complete the fifth climbing boulder on the Main Street to the Mountains trail system and to improve the Westside Trail. REI has also been an important partner at our National Trails Day events.

About their partnership with GVLT, Bozeman REI’s Teresa Larson says it is a natural fit, as stewardship is core to REI’s mission to “inspire, educate and outfit for a lifetime of outdoor adventure and stewardship”. Larson says, “Given the nature of our mission, it’s easy to understand why GVLT was chosen as one of our primary nonprofit partners. Both organizations are committed to connecting people to the outdoors and protecting the natural places we love. Both work to ensure that the next generation has a connection to the natural spaces we all enjoy, and that these lands and the recreational opportunities they offer are protected and enhanced. The goals are simple: to invite and engage more people to enjoy the outdoors and the benefits of a healthy, active outdoor lifestyle and to nurture a new generation of outdoor stewards. With our eye to the future, we look forward to supporting GVLT projects that get people outdoors on our trails and public lands and encourage active stewardship.”

Public and private partner organizations displayed materials describing their work and possible funding sources for private land conservation efforts. Partner organizations included: Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS), United States Department of Agriculture- Rural Development (USDA-RD), Montana Department of Fish Wildlife and Parks (MT FWP), Montana Department of Natural Resource and Conservation (DNRC), Associated Gallatin Agricultural Irrigators (AGAI), Greater Gallatin Watershed Council (GGWC), Gallatin Local Water Quality District (GLWQD), Gallatin Weed District, Montana Department of Agriculture, MSU Extensions, Northern Rocky Mountain Resource Conservation and Development, and Trout Unlimited. Landowners in attendance noted that this was a great event to learn about the different public and private organizations and what programs and resources they have that can help landowners plan for future stewardship projects on their farm or ranch property. The event was partially funded by the Heart of the Rockies Initiative.
