Special Edition: Peets Hill Tote Bags
Introducing GVLT’s special edition Peets Hill tote bag, featuring a stunning painting by Bozeman-based artist Anna Patterson.
The collaboration was born out of a shared passion for trails and open space. Earlier this year, GVLT Director of Development Justin Barth was eating at Little Star Diner—which proudly showcases Anna’s landscapes—when he was mesmerized by a painting of Peets Hill, which was GVLT’s first trails project. Captured perfectly at the golden hour, the iconic setting and the scene’s warmth sparked an idea: Would Anna consider licensing an image of the painting for special edition GVLT merchandise? Fortunately, she said yes!
“I was delighted that GVLT asked, and to be a small part of GVLT and connected with such an amazing mission for our community,” said Anna.
Anna’s Creative Process
Anna typically paints from photos, which is why she takes pictures everywhere she goes. She has built quite a collection to choose from, but the decision isn’t easy.
“I have to be excited to paint an image, or there is no life to it,” Anna explains.
Once she selects her subject, she determines the canvas size—square or rectangle, horizontal or vertical, large or small—before beginning with a warm-toned underpainting, building rich colors on top.
Why Peets Hill?
Anna is always searching for compositions and light that evoke a deep sense of place. She caught the Peets Hill landscape just as the sun was setting, creating a glow around the pine trees.
"That view is iconic, looking across downtown to the Bridgers," she says.
Like so many Bozeman residents, Peets Hill holds a deeply personal spot in her heart. It was on a bench atop Peets Hill that Anna and her husband, Chris, made the life-changing decision to move to Bozeman back in 2005. Once settled, it quickly became their daily dog-walking trail.
Protecting the Views That Inspire Us
For Anna, supporting GVLT’s mission is a natural extension of her life as an artist.
“As an artist who covets our land and our views and our landscape, it’s extremely important to protect these open spaces,” Anna shares. “We need places to go where you can be inspired by the land, walk, think, and just be human.”
